According to Tom Percy KC, the sacking of three Western Power employees – who provided character references for a colleague convicted of sexual assault on a work trip – is unlikely to hold up.

Percy told 6PR Mornings host Simon Beaumont that offering a character reference is not a defence of the crime itself.

“I think that writing someone a character reference is not a justification of the offence. I think that’s where minister Amber-Jade Sanderson has got it completely wrong. You’re not justifying the offence, you’re saying that the person was, prior to committing the offence, a person of good character”, Percy said.
