The singer died at a ranch in Southern California surrounded by family and friends, with her husband releasing a statement asking for “privacy during this very difficult time”.
The family requests that “in lieu of flowers … any donations be made in her memory to the Olivia Newton-John Foundation Fund”.
Dame Newton-John battled breast cancer for 30 years and was first diagnosed with cancer in 1992, before it returned in 2013 and again in 2017.
She campaigned tirelessly after her first diagnosis in 1992, founding the Olivia Newton-John Foundation Fund.
The four-time Grammy award winner is best known for her role as Sandy in the movie Grease.
Entertainment reporter Peter Ford told Gareth Parker on 6PR Mornings it is a sad day for the country, as he struggled to keep his emotions in check.
“This is almost like Australia’s Princess Diana moment,” Ford said.
“Obviously people will celebrate her achievements with music and movies of course, but more than that people are going to say ‘Gee, she really gave back, she really made a difference in the world’.”
