New figures reveal a third of alcohol is bought and consumed by only five per cent of population.

The data has raised concerns the industry is preying on our heaviest drinkers.

Foundation for Alcohol Research and Education lead researcher Megan Cook said a new report showed alcohol companies rely on people who drink the most for maintaining sales.

“What these results are really doing is calling into question the industry and their intention when they say want to reduce the drinking in heavy drinkers,” she told Gareth Parker on 6PR Breakfast.

“Greater control is needed to ensure these alcohol companies are not targeting the people who are most at risk.”
