Less West Australians are saying “I do”, as new data shows a decline of marriage whilst de facto relationships are on the rise.

UWA Demographer Amanda Davies told Julie-anne Sprague the shift to de facto relationships are being aided by “maturation in legal support and financial support for people in de facto”.

“Those laws have changed which have normalised facto de relationships and made them more acceptable”…”that push of trying to get married is no longer there when we had different arrangements,” Ms Davies said.
