One of WA’s leading infectious diseases experts has welcomed Friday’s easing of COVID restrictions across the state but urged the McGowan government to go a step further and stop “double standards” on vaccine mandates for certain workers.

Clay Golledge, who runs Infections West, said that while a ‘third dose was very important for certain people of the population but not a double-dosed waitress at a cafe for instance’.

“We’ve achieved such a good level of vaccination now, that the herd immunity, with vaccination and the natural infection that’s occurring so prolifically, is giving people a great degree of protection,” he told Liam Bartlett on 6PR Mornings.

“Hospital admissions very stable, ICU admissions very stable … so I don’t really see the need for any more mandates for certain work groups.”

WA Health reported 43,408 active COVID cases in the state on Wednesday, with 8392 new cases and 253 people in hospital with the disease – nine in intensive care.
