Parents and the elderly are being warned about sophisticated new artificial intelligence systems which can mimic the voices of loved ones.

AI scientist and lecturer Matt Kuperholtz told Millsy and Karl on 6PR Breakfast samples of people’s voices are being used to set up fake voicemail calls in efforts to scam money out of family and friends.

“They’re particularly looking for a vulnerable segment of our population – usually the elderly – who are trustworthy, so when they hang up straight away it’s usually because your voice doesn’t sound old enough,” he said.
