High-vis shirt failure: Mick’s warning after suffering severe burns

A Perth man has suffered serious burns in a close call after his high-vis shirt came into contact with fuel while he was working on a friend’s car.
Caller Mick told Liam Bartlett on 6PR Mornings the car backfired through the carburetor, with some fuel landing his high-vis shirt and melting the safety strip on it.
He was wearing a singlet underneath the shirt but the strip was exposed to his body, and when he took the shirt off, his skin came off with it.
“I just want to warn people about the dangers of the shirt,” he said.
“The shirt is supposed to be fire resistant but [the reflective strip] caused a bit of grief, sticking to my skin.
Mick said he had big patches of skin missing and blisters all over his hands, including one large one.
“I just wanted to let everyone know … because those things are supposed to be fire resistant, but this one didn’t appear to be,” he said.
“Next person might not be as lucky as I was.”
