WA prisons have hit full capacity, with 300 men and women now forced to sleep on mattresses on the floor during these cold winter nights.

Inspector of Custodial Services, Eamon Ryan, told 6PR Breakfast hosts Millsy and Karl that current conditions are likely breaching the Nelson Mandela Rules and the impacts extend beyond prison walls.

“If people go to prison and they’re treated badly and not getting any sort of services or any sort of rehabilitation, most of them are going to get out and are going to be standing next to you in the supermarket, and you do want them to come out better than they went in,” he said.
