Geraldton crayfishermen cashing in as Border Force gift people smugglers new vessels

Australian Border Force are reportedly buying crayfishing boats for hundreds of thousands of dollars in Geraldton and swapping out unseaworthy people smuggler vessels intercepted before enforcing their return to Indonesia.

Perth Today host Simon Beaumont spoke to Geraldton Mayor Jerry Clune, who was not convinced the practice would be effective.
‘It’s certainly a novel approach to, I guess, a humanitarian type of way of saying, here on you go, and don’t come back, but I don’t know what the guarantee is not to come back,’ he said.
