From the coalface: violent Northbridge patrons often return ‘to have another crack’

A prominent Northbridge nightclub owner believes the police need more “tools in the arsenal” to combat violence and anti-social behaviour in the precinct.

Speaking with Oliver Peterson, Trevor Candido said it’s “paramount” that police are able to take people off the street who are known to be violent.

“Unfortunately we have a system where violent perpetrators are put in handcuffs, spoken to and given a move on notice,” he said.

“And then the hand cuffs are taken off and they are free to roam around Northbridge again.”

Despite a move on notice meaning the person must leave the precinct, Mr Candido said they often return “in an hour’s time to have another crack.”

However, he said be believes WA Police are doing their best with the tools they’ve got but they need something more effective.

“The punishments need to match what the behaviour is, he said.

“I’ve got a funny feeling it isn’t doing that.”

The comments come as a teenager accused of murdering a man in Northbridge at the weekend has faced court.

Two men were stabbed during a fight on the corner of Lake and Aberdeen streets in the early hours of Saturday morning.

One of them, 28-year-old Manar Pan Mading, died from his injuries.

Samuel Mohamed Lamin Bah faced court this morning on one count of murder. The 18-year-old from Belmont will remain behind bars until his next appearance next month.

Meanwhile, Perth Lord Mayor Basil Zempilas said incidents like these are “not good” for the city.

“People are fed up with this anti-social behaviour and totally untoward behaviour where people are not safe going out in licensed venues and areas,” he said.

“It’s not what our community expects.”

Mr Zempilas said people said need to start taking responsibility for their actions.

“It’s not Northbridge’s fault that people with pre-mediated grievances come into Northbridge to play them out in the early hours of a Saturday,” he said.

“That is a symptom of what is going on with some of these communities and the people involved in these events.

“Northbridge cops a bad wrap because of it.”

However, Mr Zempilas believes everyone has a role to play in improving Northbridge.

“Parents, friends, communities, the licensed venues and the city of Perth has a role to play and obviously law and order begins and ends with the police.”
