Former WA Liberal leader calls for reform to emergency powers

Former WA Liberal Party Leader Bill Hassell has penned a letter outlining his concerns with overarching emergency laws.
Mr Hassell says the main problem is that “there is no redress” for WA residents seeking exemptions or to appeal rulings.
“There should be a special appeal mechanism that allows you to appeal very quickly without going through a court process,” he said on 6PR Mornings.
“You should be able to go to the administrative appeals tribunal or someone, and get a 24 hour answer.
“It is after all a purely discretionary matter, and the bureaucrats just don’t have any regard of people’s basic rights.
“They’re not given any reasons, they’re not treated with decency.”
