Ford blasts comedy festival’s staggering Barry Humphries backflip
The Melbourne Comedy Festival has released a statement reneging on their “cancelling” of the late Burry Humphries.
The festival changed the name of the Barry Award – the prize given to the favourite comedian of a given festival run – to the “Melbourne International Comedy Festival Award” after contention over remarks Humphries supposedly made about the trans community in 2019.
Entertainment reporter Peter Ford said he found the festival’s move to pay tribute to Humphries after his death was “disgusting”.
“The timing of it is appalling. To jump in like this when the family is still grieving… this could be causing them further grief,” he said.
