A third-generation fisherman, Nicholas Soulos of Leschenault Fisheries, said he was blindsided by the state government’s decision to ban demersal fishing.

Click PLAY to hear how the decision is impacting small businesses.

Speaking to Perth Live host Russell Collett, Soulos questioned the research underpinning the ban and warned that the decision could actually have a negative impact in what he says is the most sustainable shark fishery in the world. He stated:

“Your juvenile Pink snapper and your juvenile Dhu fish which they’re trying to bring back to a decent biomass level are going to be the prime food for this increased shark population,” he said.

Following Soulos, Collett spoke with Matt Taylor, CEO of Western Rock Lobster. Taylor argued that key decisions should have been made much earlier and that industry representatives should have had a role in the discussions.

He criticised Recfishwest, stating: “Recfishwest have been totally irresponsible and incredibly damaging,” he said.
