The Matildas have proven their match form with a 1-0 win against Ireland in their first match of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, but the headlines were focused on more unfortunate news.

Sam Kerr’s calf injury ruled her out of the match and may delay her on-field appearance for weeks, depending on scan results.

Nine News sports reporter Paddy Sweeney told Gary Adshead on 6PR Mornings the news cycle was turned on its head by the news, which came out an hour before kickoff

“This is a Sam Kerr who is 29 years of age, at the peak of her absolute power; she is a superstar across the world;  she’s the captain of our team; we’re a genuine chance of winning this year’s World Cup,” Mr Sweeney said.

“She’s our West Aussie superstar, and an hour before kick-off the team sheet drops, and there’s no Sam Kerr.”
