Federal government doubles down on no changes to GST

Federal Finance Minister Simon Birmingham has backed the Prime Minister promise that there will be no changes to GST.

It comes as newly installed NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet called for changes to the tax, arguing his state are not getting a fair share.

But Minister Birmingham said the federal government’s position is clear.

“Scott Morrison negotiated the deal that gave the guaranteed floor of 70 cents in the dollar to WA,” he told Gareth Parker on 6PR Breakfast.

“But it’s a guaranteed floor that applies to every state and territory too, in fairness.

“I reckon if New South Wales were facing a situation where there share of GST was going to drop below 70 cents in the dollar, they’d think that a guaranteed floor was fair too.”
