Family outraged at sentence over horror Perth Hills crash that killed new mum
The grandmother of 23-year-old mother Darryleen Koolmatrie (above), who was killed after the car driven by her partner Grantley Dean Penny crashed into a power pole in September 2021, says the sentence handed down to him on Tuesday has added to their grief and pain.
She told Liam Bartlett on 6PR Mornings the family was devastated at the sentence, and would have preferred the 31-year-old be punished by traditional Indigenous law.
“We can’t make sense of it, you can’t make sense of a death that happened this way – and she’s gone, she’ll never come back, we will never see her again, never hear her voice again,” she told Liam Bartlett on 6PR Mornings on Friday.
“We won’t have the joy of seeing her bring up her baby son … he will never have the joy and comfort of knowing his mother’s love and being with his mother… that’s a big loss before you start talking about anything else, and any other trauma in all our family.”
