Emotions high at Perth Airport as WA border reopens
Emotions were high at Perth Airport as WA was finally reconnected to the world after almost two years.
About 100 passengers on a Singapore Airlines and an Emirates’ Dubai flight were the first to enjoy WA’s new quarantine-free arrival rules.
The first of those passengers trickled through the airport’s international arrival gates shortly after midnight on Thursday.
Not only were they reunited with loved ones, but greeted with a serenade from the Perth Symphony Orchestra and gifts from Tourism WA.
Vaccinated international travellers can now enter WA for the first time since Premier Mark McGowan imposed WA’s hard border to the world in early April 2020.
Perth Airport expects 5000 interstate and international to land on their tarmacs in the 24 hours following the State’s hard border being brought down.
That is compared to just 636 arrivals last Thursday.
6PR and Nine News reporter Ashtyn Hiron told Gareth Parker on 6PR Breakfast there were tears of joy as families were reunited.
