E-bike fatality rates nearly double those of traditional bicycles

With e-bike popularity soaring, experts urge caution as research indicates a dramatic increase in fatalities involving e-bikes.

Dr Milad Haghani, Senior Lecturer at UNSW, explained to 6PR’s Breakfast hosts Mick and Mark that the research is limited because Australia doesn’t differentiate between e-bikes and normal bicycles when recording injuries and fatalities. However, international data is alarming.

‘The risk of fatalities for regular bicycles is way below the risk of fatalities for e-bikes,’ he said.
