Former US President Donald Trump could face criminal charges over the January 6 Capitol Hill riots.

The attack left five people dead and caused millions of dollars in damage.

The committee investigating the incident is likely to recommend legal action against Mr Trump.

Dr Margaret Russel, Associate Professor of Law at Santa Clara University, told Gary Adshead on 6PR Mornings that the panel has made it clear that they expect accountability.

“The panel surely hopes that there will be an outcome that is more than symbolic,” Dr Russel told Gary.

“At this point he can still run – however, the kind of charges, particularity over-throwing the government go right to the core of the constitutional duty of the president so I think it will ensure that many road blocks are presented.”
