The Australian Medical Association has warned one in three young doctors about to leave the profession as another WA nurse has spoken out after enduring an 18-hour hospital shift.

The AMA is now petitioning the Cook Government to prioritise the issue of excessive hours ahead next month’s healthcare workforce summit.

AMA WA President Michael Page told Mick and Gena onĀ 6PR Breakfast it’s particularly bad timing considering the WA healthcare system is already under enormous pressure.

“The doctors are burnt out, and if any more leave we are seriously going to see effects on the ability of the WA hospital system to care for Western Australian patients,” Dr Page said.
