DFES urges patience as Kalbarri businesses sweat on rebuild

The Department of Fire and Emergency says it sympathises with locals in Kalbarri waiting for key infrastructure to be rebuilt after a devastating cyclone 18 months ago.
Iconic tourist attractions remain closed, along with several popular restaurants and cafes, while emergency accommodation is needed for workers rebuilding the town during peak holiday seasons.
DFES Deputy Commissioner Melissa Pexton responded to criticism of the delays in the North West tourist town after the destruction from Cyclone Seroja.
“We recognise small businesses are doing it tough and we have facilitated … small business with financial counselling and assistance as required,” she told Michael Genovese on 6PR Breakfast.
