A Perth woman whose 19-year-old granddaughter drowned in Queensland is fearful if she travels to attend her funeral in Cairns, she won’t be able to come back home.

The Sunshine State will be upgraded to an extreme risk this evening, removing the majority of compassionate exemptions.

The funeral is in Cairns next week.

Kerry says she is too scared to fly to Queensland in case she gets stuck there, and won’t be allowed to fly back home to WA, even when the borders are due to re-open on February 5.

She found tickets to fly to Cairns, via Sydney.

She has been unable to get an answer on whether she will be allowed to return based on compassionate grounds.

“We were all set to go, and now we can’t come back,” she told 6PR Mornings.

“It’s just devastating.”
