Harsh new penalties aimed at deterring motorists from using their mobile phone while driving have now come into effect.

A $1000 fine and four demerit points will be handed to those caught touching their devices while driving.

Lesser penalties apply for those caught stopped at traffic lights.

Distraction from mobile phone use played a role in 31 fatalities across the state last year.

6PR reporter Jake Battrick hit Perth streets this morning to see if drivers were getting the message and told Gareth Parker on Mornings the results weren’t pretty….
