Former Fremantle coach Ross Lyon has officially commented on his interest in the vacant Essendon coaching job, while making his intentions even murkier.

6PR sports presenter Paddy Sweeney told Gareth Parker on Breakfast he believes Lyon’s comments – made on Nine’s Footy Classified last night – were intended to confuse so he didn’t appear desperate to return to AFL coaching.

“I think he’s interested to test the waters, but I don’t know if he’s keen on running the process, this is what eventually tipped him out of going for the Carlton job,” he said.

“As I see this, he’s trying to declare a bit of interest… ‘hey I’m open to chat to people, so you guys chat with me, but I don’t want to go chips all in because I don’t want to be seen to be failing at another bid’.”
