The Committee for Perth has produced a series of case studies in the What We Thought Would Kill Us series, looking at developments which were initially rejected by people in Perth but have gone on to be embraced.

The latest report took looks at ‘alfresco dining’.

CEO for Committee of Perth, Marion Fulker told Oly Peterson on Perth Live it was a hard-fought battle in two phases.

“We had migrants come to our shores from Mediterranean climates and they couldn’t understand why you couldn’t eat and drink outside,” she said.

“I’m sure many listeners would recall Papas Luijis Cafe on the Fremantle strip,  where the owner would put chairs, tables and umbrellas out and patrons would come.

“But along would come the council inspector and saw its unlawful…. flies landing on food could make us sick… and shut it down.

“In the end, we’ve ended up with a very vibrant outdoor dining across Perth and WA.”
