Broome’s ranking as Australia’s top tourist town caused much conjecture with 6PR Breakfast listeners on Thursday morning.

Host Gareth Parker was inundated with messages from listeners who sharply disagreed with Australian Traveller’s decision, mainly due to the lack of activities in the historic pearling town.

The magazine’s editor Quentin Long told Parker the North West tourist town was the one “most readers wanted to visit”.

“We asked readers for their top five they wanted to visit, so we tried to get away from parochialism …. and we asked for the top five so the ones that have universal appeal don’t just float to the top,”  he said.
