There are concerns local government candidates who offer to donate their salaries are hurting equity after several candidates made the pledge as part of their election campaigns.

President of the Australian Local Government Women’s Association Kylie Spears claims it’s not indicative of good governance and representation.

“It discriminates basically against individuals who can’t do it. And we want our local governments to reflect our communities,” she said on 6PR Perth Today.

“It actually excludes a number of Australians from being able to serve in local government. If it’s only those who can rely on their own income and support themselves. That’s not actually fair and equitable access.”
