Community market to close down

The popular South Beach Sunset Market in Fremantle will be closed due to increased running costs after ten years.

Founder Georgie Adeane says it’s a terrible loss for the local community.

“The council decided two years ago to put it out to tender … the problem is that they’ve increased the overheads,” she told Gareth Parker on 6PR Breakfast.

“It cost a bomb to put it on every Saturday, between $5000 and $7000, and they’re asking an extra $3000 every Saturday to run it, as rent, and it’s just not viable.

“I didn’t tender for the market, and nobody is did, because it’s untenable.

“So basically it’s the end … unless we have a change of council.”
