The AHA & Furphy WA’s Best Steak Sandwich Competition cook-off took place at Crown Perth, where our very own Oliver Peterson joined the judging panel to determine the winner of the competition.

MickeyPhull, Chef from The Last Local in Canningvale took the title home, with a controversial braised beef ‘steak sandwich’ that challenged the traditional version.

“You are only left with three cuts – sirloin, scotch or eye fillets. We can keep doing that for another century and it will just be the same. If we do not explore other parts of beef or cook it in a different way, then we will never know what else is available,” Mickey told Oly.

“This time I thought it has to be different, complicated, controversial and provokes you to think that this chef has done something.”

Oly further asked the Chief Executive of the Australian Hotels Association, Bradley Woods about his thoughts on the controversy and whether it met the steak criteria.

“It did, it was beef from a cow – and therefore, it’s part of a steak sandwich,” Mr Woods said.
