A crisis media expert says Cricket Australia’s handling of the Tim Paine texting scandal resembles a “car crash” and is a “textbook poster child for how not to manage your reputation”.

It comes as Tim Paine released a statement on Friday saying he would step back from all cricket commitments indefinitely.

Pat Cummins has been announced as the new captain, with former captain Steve Smith being promoted to vice captain.

Founder and CEO of Good Talent Media Tony Nicholls said the organisation has set an extremely low bar.

“If there was a lot of clarity on their values, and what they stand for, then this wouldn’t be happening,” he said on 6PR Mornings.

“They’ve got a culture of coverup. I’d hazard a guess that if we didn’t see sandpaper-gate live into our lounge rooms, we wouldn’t know a thing about it.

“If Cricket Australia could have covered it up, they would have.”
