Mexican fast-food chain Guzman y Gomez has drawn criticism after opting to import pork from Denmark instead of sourcing it from local Australian farmers.

Tim Kingma, a board director at Australian Pork Limited, told 6PR Breakfast hosts Millsy & Karl that consumers deserve the option to back local producers.

“I want Australians to have the choice when they go into a food service venue to say ‘I can support an Aussie farmer or I can buy imported meat’,” he said.

While acknowledging the move was likely driven by cost, Kingma said a price variance of 8¢ to 10¢ would have little effect on the final cost of a burrito.
