Australian and Melbourne cricketing legend Shane Warne has passed away suddenly, aged 52.

It is believed the iconic spin bowler suffered a suspected heart attack while holidaying in Thailand overnight.

“Shane was found unresponsive in his villa and despite the best efforts of medical staff he could not be revived,” Warne’s management confirmed in a statement.

“The family requests privacy at this time and will provide further details in due course.”

Warne’s death comes hours after he tweeted a tribute of his own to former Australia wicket-keeper Rod Marsh.

He took 708 Test wickets in 145 Tests, placing him second behind Muttiah Muralitharan on the all-time wickets tally in Test cricket.

In 2000, Warne was voted by Wisden as one of the five greatest cricketers of the 20th century.
