The Vatican has confirmed Cardinal George Pell has died after complications from hip surgery.

George Pell died in Rome. He was speaking to doctors post-hip replacement surgery where he went into cardiac arrest.

A few days earlier he attended the funeral of Pope Benedict XVI.
