One of Western Australia’s most beloved animals, Sumatran orangutan Puteri, has died at Perth Zoo aged 56.

Click play to hear the impact Puteri had on her keepers.

Puteri was humanely euthanised on veterinary advice following a decline in her health due to age-related conditions.

Speaking to 6PR Drive host Rusty Collett, Perth Zoo primate keeper Marty Hart described the loss as “unfathomable”.

“I’ve known Puteri for 26 years, which is more than half my own lifetime and she’s been a part of my life for pretty much all of my main events. To think she won’t be here tomorrow when I walk into work is unfathomable but at the same time it was time for her. We don’t want to prolong anything and she was ready,” she said.
