Avocado production is set to double by 2026 to 170,000 tonnes as demand for the popular fruit skyrockets.

Avocados Australia CEO John Tyas says demand in Australia is one of the highest in the world, and it’s only going to get bigger.

“We’ve seen phenomenal growth,” he told Gareth Parker on 6PR Breakfast.

“It’s been happening for a few years now, it’s really been a response by the industry to the demand, for the love of avocados that we’ve got here in Australia.”

Mr Tyas said a mix of climate and promotion has made avocados an Aussie favourite.

“The fact that we can grow all year round means that it’s on the shelf all year round,” he said.

“And I just think there’s been a lot of work done to promote the use of avocados, the wonderful health properties of avocados, it’s just a fantastic product.
