Third party phone repairers could be put out of business after Apple announced a significant shift to a policy over who can make repairs to the devices.

The tech giant announced “Self Service Repair” for the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13, giving customers who want to complete their own repairs the tools to do so.

It will be available early next year in the US and then expanded into selected countries.

Tech expert Trevor Long told Gareth Parker said it will still be a complicated process.

“Let me be clear, it doesn’t say it’s simple,” he said on 6PR Breakfast.

“Really what this is about is saying ‘we’ll make the parts and tools available to you if you really want to give it a crack’.

“But … that’s also them essentially saying, for authorised third party repairers, it’s getting a lot easier to get access to these parts and tools”.
