A security analyst says Australia’s new nuclear-powered submarines should be built in the United States.

It comes after Australia signed the AUKUS security pact with the US and the UK which would give Australia access to the submarines.

The deal however was admonished by France and the European Union, who Australia had signed a multi-billion submarine manufacturing deal with just years earlier.

James Kell from Australian National University and the Crawford School of Public Policy told Jane Marwick the US should build them because they’ve been doing it for a long time.

“Nuclear subs are some of the most complex subs that any country can make,” he said

“The Americans invented them, post second world war, and they’ve had decades to improve the designs, and to improve their supply chain on the east coast of the United States.

“It takes a long time.”
