AMA accused of fear-mongering following community pharmacy program expansion

Doctors are raising concerns following the expansion of the Community Pharmacy program, which now enables pharmacists to manage asthma, ear, and skin conditions.
Kyle Hoath, WA AMA President, clarified to Perth Today host Simon Beaumont that this isn’t a “turf war” but rather a focus on ensuring patients receive the safest and most appropriate care.
“They’re not trained or equipped to take on this role of a doctor,” he said.

Simon then interviewed Pharmacist Andria Aird, who highlighted that the new guidelines mandate an additional postgraduate certificate and strict protocols.
“This is really intense training that the pharmacists are getting on just a few conditions at a time,” she said.
