A pioneering study into the effects of stone bench-top cutting on workers has been undertaken at Monash University and has produced some disturbing results.

Monash University respiratory and sleep disorders physician  Doctor Ryan Hoy told Gary Adshead on 6PR Mornings silica dust was not being safely handled or even recognised in the industry.

“That causes really high levels of silica exposure, and really tragically the results we’re seeing in silicosis.”

WA is the only state that has already legislated the requirement for use of CT rather than chest x-ray to screen silica exposed workers, with the Monash study likely supporting such an approach nationally.
