New police figures have shown that over 5,000 drivers have been caught using a mobile phone whilst driving so far this year, a massive increase on last year.

Experts say we are on track to reach over 6,000 for 2022, where each motorist will be fined $1000 and four demerit points.

Will Golsby, General Manager of External Relations at RAC told Oliver Peterson on Perth Live that the news is incredibly alarming.

“We really need to change our attitudes because it is a dangerous habit that can kill or seriously injure someone,” he told Oly.

“The government needs to keep looking at this because the message is not getting through – there is a lot of people out there doing the right thing but obviously with these alarming statistics there is a lot of people that are doing the wrong thing.

“I think we need to look at a mix of things but I think mainly we have become complacent and really the attitude in the car starts with us.”
