The number of ATMs has halved in Australia in the past five years.

The dwindling popularity of cash, turbocharged by the pandemic, means ATMs will continue to be removed.

Swinburne University Adjunct Professor Steve Worthington told Jo McManus on 6PR Afternoons despite the reduction of ATMs, Australia will not become a cashless society. 

“Cash is still very valuable as a store of wealth,” said Professor Worthington.

“Cash will always be around because certain groups in our society rely on it.”
