This week’s West Aussie Great is Jamie Mercanti, better known in Perth entertainment circles as Slim Jim.

The legend of the local music scene told Gareth Parker on 6PR Breakfast he didn’t know he wanted to be a musician until his journalism degree took a back seat to the burgeoning local music scene in the 80s and 90s.

Mercanti revealed his role incorporating music and footy shows in the 1990s, and also touched on the challenges facing local musicians in the post-COVID world, in a wide-ranging chat.

“Even with the lack of opportunities with hospitality being closed down so regularly, it was wonderful to see so many people coming out and seeing the local bands,” he said of the recent venue closures during the pandemic here.
