Western Australia has recorded more than a 1000 new COVID-19 cases in a single day for the first time, with locally-acquired infections surging to 1039 on Friday.

Twelve people are now in hospital, however none in ICU, as the state’s Omicron outbreak grows in line with the state government’s modelling of the variant.

The state’s Chief Health Officer Andy Robertson said on Friday four other cases were related to interstate or international travel, while WA’s largest remote Aboriginal community in the Kimberley, Bidyadanga, recorded another 10 cases overnight and remains in lockdown with 29 active cases.

6PR Mornings host Liam Bartlett revealed the latest COVID figures and queried if WA Premier Mark McGowan would now consider moving the state to tighter Level 2 restrictions.

“So 1039 local new COVID cases, so we have well and truly gone through that 1000 COVID-case number limit that the Premier talked about the other day, in terms of implementing new levels of restrictions,” he said.

The Premier said on Friday afternoon Level 1 public health measures will be rolled out across WA from 6am on February 28 and begin in the Kimberley tomorrow, while close contact requirements would change for the state’s most critical workers.
