Responses over the handling of bushfires around the state have continued after the Bushfire Volunteers said there was no substance to the argument that 500 more career fighters were needed.

Earlier this week, Tim Kucera, state secretary of the United Firefighters Union of Australia, told Perth LIVE that DFES didn’t provide enough resources to help fight bushfires around the state.

Bushfire Volunteers state president Dave Gossage says that is a “load of rubbish”.

“At the end of the day, what is their end game? It’s all about more membership and more funds.” he said told Oliver Peterson.

Mr Gossage believes there is no substitute for local community knowledge of the terrain and area.

“A lot of people aren’t aware that 98 per cent of the fires across WA are actually run by the local governments and the volunteers themselves. It’s not until they get to a level where you need statewide coordination that the local governments will hand over to DFES,” he says.
