Calls for sugar tax

The Beverages Council has rejected calls for a sugar tax warning it won’t benefit public health.

Australian of the year Doctor James Muecke operates on diabetes patients who have gone blind.

Doctor Muecke believes a sugar tax could reduce the number of Australians who contract diabetes.

But Beverages Council Chief Executive Geoff Parker says people should be encouraged to focus on their diet instead.

However Livelighter WA’s manager Kelly Livingston supports a tax on sugar.
