Is it time to rename Stirling Highway?

A Claremont anthropologist says Stirling Highway should be renamed to a Nyoongar name.

Emily Egerton-Warburton has started a petition calling for the major road renamed because of the murder of Nyoongar people in Pinjarra, which Captain James Stirling was responsible for.

“I don’t think genocide is something we should be remembering by naming one of our major arterial roads.

“It’s a shocking memory and a shocking image. I don’t think it’s anything to be proud of and I don’t think it is a memory that easily fades away for Nyoongar people.”
