Designer mosquitoes could eradicate killer diseases
A revolutionary breeding program to help eradicate deadly viruses spread by mosquitoes has begun.
Dr Maciej Maselko, a CSIRO Synthetic Biology Future Science Fellow in Macquarie’s Department of Biology, has developed a technique which effectively creates ‘synthetic species’.
Dr Maselko spoke to Gareth Parker to explain how engineered mosquitoes immune to the problem diseases, breed with wild partners and produce offspring that are either sterile or genetically programmed to die .
