Perth Aboriginal health advocate Donna Nelson has returned home as part of an international prisoner transfer after spending three years in a Japanese jail on drug smuggling charges.

Hear the full interview.

Nelson was caught up in an online romance scam and originally sentenced to six years’ imprisonment.

Speaking to 6PR Weekends host Rusty Collett, Nine reporter Jamie Freestone – who covered Nelson’s case – recalled her first day in court.

“I won’t ever forget when she walked into the courtroom on the first day of her trial and that was the first time she [had] seen her children. They were about a metre from each other but they couldn’t even reach out to touch hands,” he said.
