Following the alleged attack on MP Helen Haines, Deputy Premier Rita Saffioti has weighed in on the escalating level of abuse directed at politicians.

Saffioti told 6PR Mornings host Simon Beaumont that the abuse on social media is “toxic and dehumanising”, which she feels carries a lot of the blame.

“People say things on social media that they would never say to your face”, Saffioti said.

State Opposition Leader Basil Zempilas was asked by Beaumont if he would curb his behaviour in parliament moving forward:

“I don’t cross any lines and I will continue to be robust and maintain those personal standards. I don’t make it personal, that has always been the way that I operate, but will I continue to hold the state government to account?”, Zempilas said.
