The Public Transport Authority has requested speed exemptions for its expanded ferry network, raising further concerns among advocates for Matilda Bay.

Under the submission, vessels would be exempt from the eight-knot speed limit between the Blue Boat House and Elizabeth Quay, allowing ferries to reach speeds of up to 25 knots along parts of the route.

Megan Bagworth from Safety on Swan told 6PR Weekends host Russell Collett that safety concerns have heightened.

“On the open water, it’s dark and it’s very difficult on the river to be able to maintain that speed and still be able to operate safely,” she said.

“I kind of liken it to the PTA considering a new bus route and considering speed exemptions through school zones to meet timetable requirements. These speeds are in place as a result of extensive research and evidence to protect the Swan River.”
